You do not need to have one before you get there. For example, if you're not a US citizen and haven't lived in the US then there's no reason for you to have one. However, once you arrive on campus, they will help you through the process of obtaining one. It's important to have for tax purposes. But many organizations will now work with alternative numbers as well so it is not essential for starting off.

I would say technically yes, but in reality, no. When I signed up for school, they never asked for my social security (or proof of). The only people that asked me for it (but not proof of) were the financial aid people.

like any other school ........ shot records birth certificate, s.s. card....well when I went
a lot of non Americans/immigrants (what ever is correct today) things change in America
