A virus scan alert came on my screen from McAfree it was a trojan was detected, but it cannot be cleaned, or?

:or deleted or quaranteened. when I push any of these options, it say it failed.

After I ran a scan the same generic downloader z trojan was found that listed the file path (c/documents,etc) ,but it says this file cannot be found.

The original popup has the file and the file path, trogan name, and status (when I tried to quarantined status changed from cannot be cleaned to quarantine failed.

Please tell me what to do and also answer the following questions (I am new to computers..this one is only 5 days old..can't take it back as mail ordered.

I. It keeps saying to verify the file is not write protected, what does that mean?

2. I guess it won't help to verify -though- if it won't delete, quarantine, or clean it, will it?

3. How do I guess this off my computer and will it hurt computer.

4. also can I use the net or will it hurt to do that and can I turn it back on ok after I shut off?

Please help-I am scared and totally confused with tecnical stuff if too complicated.

Reboot the computer in Safe Mode by turning on the PC an repeatedly press the F8 key until you get a screen with the option for Safe Mode
When you go into Safe Mode everything on yout screen will look larger than normal. That is alright. It will return to normal on your next reboot.
Run a Virus scan
McAfee could not remove the file because the file was loading and being used (by the trojan) at the time you ran the scan. By booting in Safe Mode you prevent anything except the minimum files needed to run XP from loading. So you will be able to clean the file in Safe Mode.
Once you have completed the Virus Scan, reboot the PC and you should be good to go.

One funny thing, how can McAfee left that trojen run into your computer?

Try other type of removal tool if possible. (I use both Symantec Norton Spyware and McAfee VirusScan) For no removal tool can remove ALL trojan and viruses.

When asking for help removing a Malware infection you should always list the name of the infection exactly as the program that found it lists it.

Some trojan require very special Programs and procedures to remove them.

Since I don't know the name of the Trojan, go here and download ewido. It is the best Trojan remover for most trojans.

Start Ewido. When you run it the first time, you get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.

On the main screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start Update button.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

Click on Scanner

Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:

- Binder
- Crypter
- Archives

Click on Start Scan and let Ewido scan the PC

While the scan is in progress, you will be prompted to 'Clean files', click OK.



Let's get cleaning

Temporarily show hidden files.

For Windows XP:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.


For older systems:

1.
Double-click My Computer, click View, and then click Folder Options.

On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders, and clear the Hide protected operating system files check box.


IMPORTANT Files are hidden by Windows for a very good reason. It is not wise to experiment with these files. Unfortunately, to successfully remove modern spyware we must turn this protection off temporarily. Please turn the protection back on when you have finished cleaning your system.



Empty your Internet Explorer cache and your other temporary file folders:

1.
On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.

2.
On the General tab, in the Temporary Internet Files section, click the Delete Files button. This will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache.

3.
Select the Delete all offline content check box in the confirmation dialogue box that appears, click OK.

4.
Click OK again.



The last steps

If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, and your computer has been successfully cleaned of spyware, there is one more thing that needs to be done.

Delete any old restore points and then create a new restore one. The old ones may, of course, be infected with the spyware and cannot be used.

First, start and then stop the Restore Service. This is done differently depending on what operating system you are running.

Windows XP:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click on the System Restore tab.

3.
Select the Turn Off System Restore check box, click Apply, then restart your computer.

4.
Return to the System Restore Tab and turn System Restore back on.


Windows ME:

1.
Click Start, click Control Panel, click System.

2.
Click Performance, click File System, and then click Troubleshooting.

3.
Enable the option Disable System Restore, click Apply then restart your computer.

To set a manual restore point complete the following steps:

Click the Start button.

Point to Programs, then navigate to Accessories, then System Tools, then click System Restore.

Choose Create a restore point, and then click Next.
