Sunshine consists of a complete array of photons of all colors and invisible ultraviolet and infrared rays all traveling at the "speed of light." Each photon is a tiny mass-less packet of energy that can be captured by the electrons orbiting about atoms and molecules. The photons can send electrons to higher more energetic orbits or even kick them out of their atoms causing ionization. The shortest wavelength photons like UV are the most energetic and penetrating (they can pass through an overcast sky and give you a sunburn when you thought you were safe!). Because the photons can affect atoms and molecules (breaking bonds) they can affect the complex chemistry of dyes and pigments. This can cause the colors to fade. Photo and photon have the same Greek root. right?
