A year oldimplies it's a Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) battery. Although Li-Ion batteries don't experience memory effect, they do have a limited lifetime.
From the time they're manufactured the electrodes inside the battery start to oxidise. Although some can last longer, a lifetime of 3 years is not unexpected for this technology. This is the reason they only typically have a 12 month warrenty.
Temperature has a big effect on lifetime, as does the amount of charge a battery is stored with. For longest life, keeping the battery at 50% in a fridge or freezer (In a plastic bag to prevent water ingress) is probably the best. However it's not much use that way, so I'd not recommend it (You lose the laptop advantage of an online UPS for a start when running without a battery, and some models require the battery to run at full speed because of power supply requirements), but some people actually store them this way.
Now memory effect. None on Li-Ion, but they are 'smart' batteries. There is a small embedded processor on-board most that monitors remaining charge and controls charge & discharge. It may be out of step with reality. To refresh this the normal method is to chare fully, then set your laptop to max power mode & run till the battery is 'flat'. Recharge fully again & doit once more. Your battery life should improve after this. Some manufacturers (IBM) have a utility that will exercise your battery for you.

Bad battery. Laptops show signs that the battery is going out after sometimes a year. It took two years for mine to start showing signs. There is one big thing that can shorten the life of the battery. That is heat. Heat is number one killer of any computer components.
For instance if you used to take your laptop and site outside in the sun and do whatever..or have it on the bed with nothing underneath it to elevate it off the bed sheets that can insulate heat.
I would invest in a new battery but also look into a coolpad.
Coolpads are a cooling device built for laptops and has fans underneath it that cools the bottom and through the bottom vents of the laptop. They range from 15-50 bucks. Search around or check the local OfficeDepot, CompUSA or BestBuy they usually have them in stock and sometimes with a mail in rebate.

Cheap laptop batteries start to hold less charge after a few hundred recharges. Most laptops come as standard with cheap batteries unfortunately. The only think you can do is upgrade the battery to a better type i think lithium ones are best off the top of my head, but these will also start to loose charge after a while too. you can try to take it back if it's still in warranty other wise. buy one there are plenty of online stores that specialise in Laptop batteries

Memory effect on the battery turning electrical atoms into dead atoms that don't hold anything but physical space-time. This deteriorating effect speeds up if you constantly left it charged to the wallplug.
The system would still say "100% charged" but such a bad battery would go down to zero from 100 in hyperspeed.
