An obelisk (Greek: obeliskos) is a tall, thin, four-sided, tapering monument which ends in a pyramidal top. Ancient obelisks were made of a single piece of stone (a monolith).
They were a prominent part of the architecture of the ancient Egyptians, who placed them in pairs at the entrance of temples. The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra,the sun-god of Heliopolis in ancient Egypt.
The obelisk have been a part of both ancient and modern architecture and various obelisks can be found in different parts of the world.

If you've studied the Egyptian culture, they built many obelisks weighing several tons. Usually they're four sided at the base and goes to a point several feet, millimeters higher. Besides the ones in Egypt, there's one from Egypt in France and large obelisks in Washington D.C. Usually, they weigh several tons and aren't easy to build and hard to stand up without possible damage to the obelisk while raising it into place. I hope this will answer your question. Also, they're made of marble or granite. David King
