anything that can replicate itself thus producing progeny. A rock can be made up of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, sulpher, phosphorus, nitrogen etc the same as most living organisms, but it does not have those atoms in the molecular arrangements that allow replication. You have to realise that replication can only come about if other mechanisms are in place that allow metabolism to ensure survival.
By the same token, viruses are not considered as living, as they do not possess the ability to self replicate - they are inert particles of RNA or DNA surrounded by a capsid that can only perform the activities of life once they are surrounded by a host cell which as all the machinary that the particle can then hijack.

Photosynthesis is a technique this is triggered vegetation. They take up easy and CO2 from the sunlight, and finally by a chain of tactics, which i do no longer likely think of you like me to escalate on, the plant comes up with molecules of glucose for capacity. some thing this is so great is that a resultant of photosynthesis is obviously O2. The scientific rationalization is that every person residing organisms require some style of capacity technique, you could no longer purely proceed to exist no longer something. So vegetation, by evolution, greater this technique to apply what they have already got (easy and carbon dioxide) and to create some thing that they do no longer (Glucose).

Life is the cycle from conception until death in which energy or a combination of forces causes growth and later begins to degenerate until death occurs. In different organisms it is necessary for different things to be present to complete that process. For example sunlight will cause certain plants to flourish whereas others require shade. If you think about it you can come up with alot of different examples.

Is that your homework word for word by any chance?
The nemonic MRS. GREN (see question below) is a good start for a GCSE level answer. There is a long section on the definition of life in Wikipedia if you type in Life it explains the different characteristics. I suggest you look on there.

Clearly you are asking us to do your homework!
Have you heard of MRS. GREN?:
Movement,
Reproduction,
Sensitivity (ability to adapt to the enviroment),
Growth,
Respiration (ability to take in oxygen and sugars to burn for energy),
Excretion (need to get rid of waste),
Nutrition (need to take in nutrients).
They are all characteristics of living things - animals AND plants.
