Well it depends on your body. Some women gain weight while others don't. Some women say their chest got bigger after birth control while nothing for others. Talk to your dr about your concerns(weight gain, side effects, complications, etc) and they will give choices on which pill is best. They also now have the ring and the patch. As for how long I have been on it.... I have taken it on and off for the past 13 yrs (between kids). The only problems I have experienced was after I had been taking it for 3 yrs religiously at the same time every night I did get pregnant, this is rare and from what my dr had told me is my body had build up an immunity to taking it. For all the critics out there who say that can't happen it does, it's rare but it can happen. I later found out my body has an unsual mechanism for building up a tolerance to any drug I take, which suck s for me. So now I have to change what birthcontol pill I am on and the strength every 6 - 12 months. Hope this doesn't scare you. Like I said what happened to me is rare.

I have been on Depo Provera for 10yrs now. The whole time I have been on it I never gained weight until I missed a shot and I didn't start back on it for about a year and in that time that is when the extra pounds came. Like some people have already stated it affects everyone diffrently so you will not know really before hand if you will gain weight or not. One of the side effects I used to experience where headaches which turned into migraines.

Oral contraceptives generally don't actually make you gain weight, however they can cause water retention, so this might be what your friend had.
I personally didn't put on any weight when I started taking the pill, but I think this article might be useful for your question...

You say you are overweight and have been having problems losing weight? Well the Dr who prescribes you the tablets may be able to offer advice as to which pills might be the most suitable, and of course can rule out any other cause for your weight gain.
However, please remember that the pill offers absolutely no protection against sexually transmitted infections. This is a very important thing to bear in mind, and when you have sex with someone without a condom, you're effectively having sex with everyone that they've had unprotected sex with. So be completely sure of your partners sexual history
Wishing you lots of luck.

The old ones make you gain weight because of the high doses. That was the reason I stopped taking about 5 years ago as I gained 8 pounds in the first month without even eating more. The new versions do noit make you gain weight. Look for Low dose or Ultra low dose bcp's like Meliane or Yasmin.
One downside though is breakthrough bleeding the first month of taking as your body adjusts. My period lasted for three weeks the first month. The suceeding months, there were cycles that I did not get my period at all. But no weight gain. I even lost 3 pounds the first month and there was no breast swelling either

Well i took yasmin for a few months and i felt that i filled out my bra some. I didn't seem to really notice weight gain. I did take it at night so I didn't deal with any side effects at all.

pills dont make you gain weight. Food does. If you eat more on a certian med then you will gain weight from the extra calories not because of the medication.

i have been taking birth control for over a year now. i didnt gain weight( i didnt notice any) but my breasts got a bit bigger. everyone reacts differently to the pill. and at the end of the day its more important to be safe then a couple of extra pounds that can be lost with healthy eating. you have to remember it every day but at least you have piece of mind. my boyfriend and i are much happier with me using it.
good luck

there are differnet kinds of birth control of course and if you mean the pill well then there are differnet kinds of that too
best to ask your doctor for one that wont make you gain weight then switch if you do
by changing your hormones you could gain, its mostly water though
