before i get into answering this question, i wanted to point out something that someone else said about the PSP. there aren't any good games for the PSP. there's like 3 games worth playing on the system, and all of them are ports from the PS2.
now, onto DS. handhelds are the way to go, this day and age, and the DS was built quite well. also, using the stylus to play feels normal, strange as it might seem at first. i would recommend the DS Lite though, ESPECIALLY if you have played gameboy advance [SP]. the buttons are in better places.
i rather liked animal crossing... but if you have no one else to play with, it gets boring after about three weeks, after you decide that you feel like messing up the game by time traveling, so that you can get more bugs.
nintendogs, i have... but it's still sealed. i'm 25... i'd hate to be caught walking in the mall with some friends, while shouting "sit!" or "fetch!" into a white rectangle...
brain age was quite fun, and lasts quite a while too. as a bonus, it also has more than a hundred soduko puzzles in it, along with trainer games that teach you how to play.
mario: partners in time was brilliant. i was thoroughly impressed with that game.
today, i'm buying harvest moon DS. i've always been a fan of that series, and the game comes out today.
pokemon ranger, which comes out next week, actually looks like it's well made, and plays more like... secret of mana, from the looks of it, than any other pokemon game.
Final fantasy III comes out on the DS in november, i think. a remade crystal chronicles is due out sometime soon too
bubble bobble is being made for the DS, as is rocket slime, a dragon quest game.
children of mana is to be on the DS
and... probably the game i want the most for the system... Zelda - phantom hourglass - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FfEdlvwDJE8

I would definitely recommend a DS. I have both a psp and a Ds and I play my Ds a lot more.
I also have both animal crossing and nintendogs and I think they are awesome games.
Animal Crossing is especially good if you play it online with other people. To do this you can either configure your ds to pick up a wifi signal (provided you have a router for your broadband) or you can buy a wifi usb connector which will send you the signal by plugging it into your PC/laptop and going on the net. This way you can meet loads of different people from around the world and visit their towns.
There have been a lot of decent releases for the DS therefore you won't be short of games to buy and I'm sure you will think it is money well spent.

I bought a DS about 6 weeks ago and bought Nintendogs with it. IMHO it's a great game and I play my DS for about 4-5 hours a day so it's been a great investment. I would dearly love to try Animal Crossing, but haven't yet. If you live in the UK, you can try out lots of DS games at www.swapgame.com I recommend the Gift Subscriptions because they are cheaper than "pay-by-month". I got a deal through them...6 months of 2 at a time rentals for £29.99. I've been using them for about 3 weeks now and they are a great service. Animal Crossing is in my rental queue.
Go for it, and happy gaming! :-)

I haven't got one myself, but I really want one and would recommend getting one.
There's the games you mentioned, plus loads more, like Super Mario 64, Mario Kart DS, new Mario Bros, Metroid Prime, Advance Wars, Final Fantasy III, etc, not to mention the huge back catalog of GBA games. Plus the fun features like Picto Chat and wireless multiplayer with people across the world!
Some people here have said 'well a PSP plays movies' - a DS can play movies too if you buy a memory card for it. Granted its screens aren't as high quality as the PSP's, but personally I'd primarily be playing games (movies are for big screens!) and the DS has more better games.
It will keep you entertained forever, well worth the money!
Even more so if you plan on getting a Wii - they will have amazing interactivity with each other!
Go treat yourself!

I had a DS for Christmas last year and I love it (I'm 26!). I have Nintendogs and it's really good. I'm looking at getting Animal Crossing as well. I also have Super Mario 64 which is brill and I still haven't completed. Mario and Luigi Partners in time is also great. I love my DS!!

My daughter has a Nintendo DS and she thinks that Animal Crossing is a bit better on Gamecube than on the DS, but she still enjoys it.
Nintendogs is great, and she loves it.
Her faves are: MarioKart & Hamtaro (which is a Gameboy game - you can play those on the DS too!)
Overall she is very happy with the DS and plays it every day (she's had it for almost a year).

Yes, both games are fantastic. I never expected to like Nintendogs as much as I did. And Animal Crossing is concentrated fun.
