I have always been a swimmer, my other half can't swim. We are going on holiday soon and have a private pool and I want to help him to swim. The problem is he just sinks when he takes his feet off the ground. I always float automatically. I don't get why he sinks. Can anyone help with this one? He just won't float unless I am supporting him.

It can be down to body fat levels, the higher % of bodyfat the easier it is to float.

Thats pretty funny the same thing happened to me last month when I went on vacation with my best friend. We were in the pool and there was only 1 float and she wanted it so I told her she could have it that I would just float around. I floated around on my back for like 5 minutes and she was amazed that I could do that. I told her it was easy and I had her try but she sunk everytime. I tried everything to get her to float like I told her to put her butt up and keep her arms out straight. Nothing worked she sunk everytime. I don't know what you can try on your husband but I hope you have better luck. Have fun on vacation.

Buoyancy can be difficult to judge.

Maybe what you need to do is get him in the ocean - or another body of salty water - where he is likely to have more buoyancy and therefore will be more likely to float. He can gain confidence, and become a good swimmer.

Then you can take him to pools - starting in the shallow end, letting him swim there, until he is confident enough to swim in deeper waters.

Good luck.

"Archimede phisic law" should help.
The most of the body will stay underwater(Except the head...) the most volume of water will be pushed away and in consequence earning the maximum of positive buoyancy.
This can helped (to be more buoyant) from making long ,big breathes, being relaxed, and in salt water if possible.
Salt water is more dense than fresh water, therefore, you can be more positive buoyant.
Another good idea is to start the swimming lessons wearing a wet suit, that is positive buoyant. Then, after a short period in which he learned the basics and he will be more confident in himself,to try without.
Step,by step.

I hope to have given you a good help.
Regards.

A Diving teacher.

components necessary: you will choose Jar/Beaker sparkling Cabonated Drink (Sprite or 7Up) Raisins this is your recommendations-set: a million. Fill a jar/beaker packed with sparkling carbonated drink. 2. upload a handful of raisins to the jar. 3. be conscious the jar. that's what's going on: This demonstration works because of the fact the bubbles of carbon dioxide gas interior the drink are much less dense than the drink or the raisins. as quickly as the raisins start to flow, they are going to save increasing and falling interior the jar for approximately an hour. once you drop the raisins into the jar/beaker of carbonated drink, the raisins are extra dense than the drink, so the raisins sink. whilst the raisins attain the backside of the jar/beaker, the gas bubbles stick to the wrinkles on the raisins, consequently inflicting the raisins to upward push. whilst the raisins attain the desirable of the jar/beaker, the gas bubbles burst. Now the raisins are extra dense than the carbonated drink, so the raisins will sink lower back. whilst the raisins are coated with bubbles lower back, they're much less dense than the carbonated drink, so the raisins will upward push lower back. This technique will proceed for approximately an hour.

Usually people with heavier bones are less likely to float. Maybe that's the case with your friend. He needs to work the abs and legs more!

tell him to relax and breathe normally. Everybody floats because our bodies are 90%(?) water. He may be like me and only his face will be out of the water but he can float, he just hasn't done yet.

If I stop swimming I sink legs first.
My legs are musclely and so have low fat levels, fat floats, muscle does'nt. He may have a simular problem.

I find breast stroke quite hard although my chubby mates find it the easiest way to swim.

Because he needs to fill his lungs with air. More air u have in ur lungs the more u float.
He needs to fill his lungs, relax and make small movements with arms and legs.

Try to empty the air in ur lungs and u'll sink to the very botton of the pool.

he's probably nervous about not knowing how to swim and this makes him tense up. In order to float you have to be totally relaxed.
