John Hancock represented Massachusetts, and served as President from 1775-77.

His was the very first signature on the Declaration of Independence in 1776. He helped to draw up the constitution of Massachusetts and became the state's 1st governor in 1780. He served until his death in 1793.

It led to people asking you to 'put your John Hancock' on cheques/documents etc. - ie. to put your signature on something
