This decade doesn't even have a name. Some people call them the "Noughties", but this is nonsense as the Americans don't use the word "nought" for zero like we do. Pop music is reheated pap, our politicians are crap, and there are no overriding fashions or themes that we'll look back on to identify these times as unique... just an empty-headed, introspective iPod generation vegetating in front of the umpteenth episode of Hollyoaks that week. So why is this decade so crap? Or do you thing it will start to take off now?

...and please, no more smug, pious lectures from people about how old I am (I'm still young enough to want some fun) or about my own life. We're talking about the decade here, not me.

It is what we make it. If this decade is no fun it means we aren't making it fun. We keep waiting for somebody else to do that.
We have lousy music because nobody bothers making better music. We have lousy politicians because we voted for them and didn't offer ourselves as better options.
If you don't like this decade, why don't you do something to make it better? If everyone put in a small effort it would result in something bitter. Start, then more will follow and then we'll be making changes.

If you think the 1990's were fun then you should have lived in the 1950's when the whole country was united. Unless our country unites and gets over the greed of the politicians wanting to make a career of politics. They need to serve so many years and then go find a job elsewhere or it will never change. They don't have to work, they are a professional politicians. That would cut some of the lobbying for special interests. Then they could satisfy the voters rather than the lobbyist. Back to you point. The 50's were peaceful and fun and safe.

Got something to do with you getting older mate....this decade, and ones before, are usually summed up and named as you get towards the end of the decade, when a true reflection of what has transpired, can be pooled upon.
maybe the youth coming in to their late teens will remember these years as halcian years, and say 2010 t0 2020 are boring....I liked the 80s, i had a good time, I also loved the nineties, did loads...i agree that the 0's seem a little more uneventful, but i have a different perspective in life now i am 40, so I am probably biased....bit like yourself

Because you are older. If you found the 90's great, then you were probably born in the late 70's or more likely the 80's. It is not about the decade, but the point you were at in your life. The best decade is probably the one you were in for most of your teens.
Pop music has always been just that ... popular music
Politicians have always been liars and vacuous
Fashions have always reused old designs in new ways
If you want to improve the decade, the. contribute to it rather than consuming it.

It's all relative: I thought the nineties were crap and that the eighties were brilliant, but looking back now, I had some great times in the nineties. You'll probably look back on this time and miss it. The name of the decade, or other things like fashion and music has nothing to do with your life ...

Well for me I found the 90's crap but this decade has been pretty good to me so I'm not complaining. It's the 80's that I really thought were a waste of time. They could of shrunk that decade into 1yr and I'd not have missed anything.

Nobody remembers something that hasn't gone by, (as we speek this decade is being taken for granted), wait till it hits 2010, you'll see a recap of what the 00's was really like, and you'll be wondering why you ever even asked this question.
maybe this question will show up in some nostalgic evaluation of what topics hit the internet durring these years somewhere in an ABC 00's segment.......
who knows.

I totally agree with you. Maybe its because we have had to spend the last 5 or so years being sensible and buying flats/houses/ paying into pensions and such nonsense. I personally have had a relapse into having as much fun as possible in the past couple, life is better that way and I have my own gaff to go back to instead of crawling into my mum and dads. So its not that bad.

I agree, a nothing decade ... I t will be looked back as a decade remembered by hoodies, 9/11, terrorism, bad music and ASBOs ... where anyone could (and did) get on TV, reality shows on every channel, and the end of people buying CDs ....
