This has a funny ring to it at my house. I say
there's a difference between garbage and trash.
To me garbage is food waste and trash is non-food
waste but my wife uses the term garbage to mean
any and all of it. I'm from the old days when there
were both a garbage man and a trash man. I know it's
more politically correct to say collector, 1) because it's
somewhat demeaning to say "man", as if "trash" or
"garbage" is a part of their character and 2) because
the man might be female. But I'm not going to say
trash person either - and certainly not trash woman.
But here I used it to capture the way we used to
say it before there was any notion of political
correctness.
With that, I keep
1) garbage separate in an airtight container and
when it's full I bring it out to the compost pile
by the garden. That might be impractical
where you don't have your own land.
Additionally I bring as much to the recycling
center as possible. That includes
2) newspaper,
3) corrugated boxes,
4) tin cans,
5) plastic and
6) glass.

First thing... minimize the garbage you bring INTO your home !! Get a fabric bag in which to do your grocery shopping or recycle your shopping bags.
1) Compost materials... paper towels, vegetable matter, egg shells can be composted. A garden then reduces the number of plastic bags you're using.
2) Recycle other materials: cans, plastic, & paper.
3) Use fewer disposable-products: dish rags instead of paper towels, a mop instead of "swisher-sweepers", glasses instead of paper/plastic cups, dishes instead of paper-plates...
oh wow... and I'm a Republican

With a wormery
What is the wormery? It's an easy, efficient system of converting ordinary kitchen food waste into liquid feed and rich organic compost through the natural action of worms.

Separate the wet (fruits & veggies peels, paper, cardboard, organic waste etc) & dry garbage (plastic, glass)
