Star Wars, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, take your pick....Im a fan and yes I own a shirt or two, but when does fan become "fan"atic?

Well, there are good "fan"atics and bad "fan"atics. Honestly, buying all the movies/books/maybe a toy or two here and there/ect isn't bad. A few t-shirts and posters also not bad.

Obsessively stalking the authors/actors, spending all your time mailing marriage proposals to said authors/actors, that's bad.

There's nothing wrong with being a fan, and enjoying something. But once it has taken up your whole life, so that you spend all or most your time involved in your chosen fandom, you've become a fanatic.

Yes, you can.
Fanatic has very different definitions among various kinds of people in the fandom.
Some define it as being able to memorize all the facts of a particular series, remembering every word the character says, splurging obscene amounts money on merchandise, you get the idea.

Others say that fanatics are simply those who like the series.

It's up to you to decide.

I am a fan of Tiger Woods, now if I were to undergo plastic surgery to resemble my icon, I would be according to you, FAN-A-TIC.
