As written, the problem makes no sense. The word "product" really has to have an "and". I strongly suspect that you either left something out or copied something down wrong. There are two possibilities:

First possibility: The "plus" is actually supposed to be an "and". That makes the problem "the product of 9 AND a number decreased by 18 = 86".

Second possibility: You left out a term after the 9. That makes the problem "The product of 9 AND ??? plus a number decreased by 18 = 86".

In the first case, the problem is ambiguous. It could mean 9x - 18 = 86 or it could mean 9*(x-18) = 86. Based on the wording, I can't tell which would be intended. If you solve these for x, both answers give you fractions. At the level of math where you get problems like this, it's surprising that your answer would contain such fractions. Given the ambiguity and the fractions, I suspect that the second case is what's actually going on here.

In the second case, I have no idea what the missing ??? would be, and without it it's impossible to solve the problem.

Please take a close look at the problem. If you really wrote it down correctly, then tell your teacher that another math teacher thinks it's a poorly written problem.

In any case, "product" means multiplication, so the people who interpret it as addition are doing the problem wrong. Also, "the product of 9" doesn't mean 9 squared (although that's a nice try at making sense of a nonsense problem). The correct phrasing is "product of one number AND another", which means the two numbers get multiplied together.

95.

You take away 9 from 86. This gives you the number with 18 taken away from it. Then just add 18.

Easy.

I wish yahoo answers had been invented when I had to do my homework.

Although the word product is used incorrectly. If it were the product of 9 AND a number decreased by 18, the answer would be 27.555r

Whenever you want to solve such problrms, alwayz take the number you want to find out as 'x' or 'y' or any-other suitable variable.

Currently we will assume the number which has to be found out to be x.

The number decreased by 18 will be (x-18).

Now, the product of nine and the number we have to find(that is, 'x' ) decreased by 18 is 86.
That can be represented mathematically as

9 * (x-18) = 86

now the solving becomes much easier after you find the equation:------

(9 * x) - (9 * 18) = 86 ...here we have just expanded the equation.

(9 * x) - 162 = 86

9 * x = 86 + 162

9 * x = 248

x = 248 / 9

x = 27.55555556 or 27.56

9 plus a numbeR?

it should have read "9 and a number"

(9x-18)=86 <====product of "9 and a number" decreased by 18

9(x-18)=86 <==product of 9 and "a number decreased by 18"

why is there a product if there is no multiplication?

9+x-18=86 <===9 plus a numer minus 18 = 86

the answer is 95. 95 minus 18 = 77 plus 9 =86

9 + x = 86 + 18 ... so x = 86 + 18 - 9 = 95.

I think the product of 9 is 9 squared = 81
23 - 18 = 5
81 + 5 = 86
Answer 23

Bear in mind the question asks: plus a number decreased by 18, to get 5 that number has to be 23.

the product of two numbers is the result of multiplying them together
so if X is the number then
9*(x-18)=86
9*x=86+(18*9)
9*x=86+162
9*x=248
x=248/9
x=27.5555

(9+x) - 18 = 86

9+x = 86+18
9+x = 104
