Catch-22 - Joseph Heller - everyone should read this once.
Long Way Down - Nick Hornby (strangers all chancing upon each other about to throw themselves off of a tower-block)

I'd suggest the following:
Fiction:
A Confederancy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
Blade Runner by Philip K Dick
The Lord of The Flies by William Golding

Non-Fiction:
Blink by Malcolm Gladwell
The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell

Join Me by Danny Wallace

It's non-put-downable.

Danny goes to a funeral of his great uncle and whilst there finds about a cult or collective his great uncle once had. Danny sets out to see if he could get more members to join his collective - setting himself a target of getting 1000 'joinees'.

He puts adverts in newspapers and does radio and tv interviews - at first remaining very cryptic about the purpose of his collective and then finding an incredibly worthwhile purpose - that still exists and now there are thousands of joinees all doing good around the world each Friday.

It's all about living for the moment in this quirky, seemingly pointless yet addictive narrative. From an silly and pointless starting idea - it had grows into something of a social experiment.

You must read this - it will make you smile and is very easy to read - but very inspiring.

A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth - it's 1400 pages long.

You should read it for two reasons - 1. you won't have to think about what to read next for a LONG time! and 2. people will think you are v.v. intellectual when they see you reading it - cos it's HUGE!!

An additional bonus is that it is so weighty it's very useful for swatting people and flys. Or holding things down in the wind.

You get the idea!!

Well without a hint of the type of author or genre you prefer I'd say go for either

The complete collection of either
* The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories
* The Nancy Drew Mystery Stories

Hey, every now and then reading some mindless fluff has its own value.........

So many possibilities. Sometimes I like to go with pot luck, pick a letter go into a bookstore and buy the first book you see in that section. That way you can read lots of different types of books you would never normally pick up.

You walk into the library or book shop and the book will choose you.

That's the way I sometimes do it when not really sure what I want 2 read.

I would say that depends on what kind of books you like to read. A little more info would be helpful.

But I would suggest something by Nora Roberts. She is a well rounded author writing everything from romance novels to some good "who-dun-its" inder the pen name of JD Robb.
