Causes of Cystitis
Infections from kidneys, the urethra
Cystitis may result from infections in other parts connected with or adjacent to the bladder such as the kidneys, the urethra, the vagina, or the prostate gland.
Irritation and inflammation in the bladder, constipation
There may be local irritation and inflammation in the bladder if urine is retained there for an unduly long time. Cystitis may also result from severe constipation.
Stones in kidneys, enlarged prostate
Other conditions like an infected kidney, stones in the kidneys or bladder, or an enlarged prostate may also lead to this disorder.

Home Remedies for Cystitis
Cystitis treatment using Cucumber Juice
Cucumber juice is one of the most useful home remedies in the treatment of cystitis. It is a very effective diuretic. A cup of this juice, mixed with one teaspoon of honey and a tablespoon of fresh lime juice, should be given three times daily.
Cystitis treatment using Drumstick Flowers
Fresh juice of the flowers of drumstick is another effective remedy for cystitis. For better results, a teaspoon of the juice, mixed with half a glass of tender coconut water, should be given twice daily. It acts as a diuretic in the treatment of this disease.
Cystitis treatment using Radish Leaves
The juice of radish leaves is valuable in cystitis. A cup of this juice should be given once daily, in the morning, for a fortnight.
Cystitis treatment using Lady's Fingers
Fresh lady's fingers are useful in cystitis. A decoction made of 100 gm of lady's fingers and 200 ml of water should be taken twice daily in the treatment of this disease.
Cystitis treatment using Spinach
A quantity of 100 ml of fresh spinach juice, taken with an equal quantity of tender coconut water twice a day, is considered beneficial in the treatment of cystitis. It acts as a very effective and safe diuretic due to the combined action of both nitrates and potassium.
Cystitis treatment using Lemon
Lemon has proved valuable in cystitis. A teaspoon of lemon juice should be put in 180 ml of boiling water. It should then be allowed to cool and 60 ml of this water should be taken every two hours from 8 a.m to 12 noon for the treatment of this condition. This eases the burning sensation and also stops bleeding in cystitis
Cystitis treatment using Barley
Half a glass each of barley gruel, mixed with buttermilk and the juice of half a lime, is an excellent diuretic. It is beneficial in the treatment of cystitis, and may be taken twice daily.
Cystitis treatment using Sandalwood Oil

The efficacy of this oil can be increased by the addition of one teaspoon of ajwain mixed in a glass of water, or ten grams of ginger mixed in a cup water.

Dietaries for Cystitis
Withhold all solid foods, water or tender coconut water
At the onset of acute cystitis, it is essential to withhold all solid foods immediately. If there is fever, the patient should fast on water or tender coconut water for three or four days.
Raw vegetable juices especially carrot juice
If there is no fever, raw vegetable juices, especially carrot juice, should be taken every two or three hours. Half a glass of carrot juice should be mixed with an equal quantity of water and taken at a time. For the next two or three days, only ripe fruits may be taken three or four times daily.
After all-fruit diet move on to well-balanced diet
After the all-fruit diet, the patient may gradually embark upon a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on seeds, nuts, grains, vegetables, and fruits. The patient should avoid refined carbohydrates and salt with food and in cooking.

Other Cystitis treatments
Take rest and keep warm
During the first three or four days of acute cystitis, when the patient is on a liquid diet, it is advisable to rest and keep warm.
Immerse pelvis in hot water to relieve pain
Pain can be relieved by immersing the pelvis in hot water. Alternatively, heat can be applied to the abdomen, by using a towel wrung out in hot water and covering it with a dry towel to retain warmth. This treatment may be continued for three or four days, by which time the inflammation should have subsided and the temperature returned to normal.
Apply cold compresses on abdomen
During the next two or three days of an all-fruit diet, cold compresses should be applied to the abdomen. While the hot compresses are intended to relieve pain, the use of cold water compresses is most valuable in relieving pelvic congestion and increasing the activity of the skin. Care should, however, be taken to ensure that compresses do not cause chilling.

Until recently I had never suffered from cystitis. I was given antibiotics and I also drank plenty of fluids. However, my urine specimen came back positive even after taking the medication etc., And I am now having further tests to find out the reason for the cystitis.

The point I am trying to make is do persevere with the medication and when you have completed the course go back to your doctor to have a urine sample sent away for testing. Hopefully it will have cleared up by then.

Also certain antibiotics can be a contradiction, and other antibiotics or even Penicillin is prescribed.

Keep on with the drinking...by the way barley water is a cheaper option than cranberry juice.

Cranberry juice is preventative, but won't do much if you actually have it right now. Make sure it is low sugar cranberry anyway - high sugar levels will make things worse. Anyway, my recommendation to you is to drink water. Not one or two glasses of the stuff - loads and loads and loads. Don't make yourself sick on it or anything lol, but just take in as much as you can. I usually drink two or three glasses in one go, sit down for a few minutes, then another few glasses. It's good because loads of water will make you need to go to the loo (obviously!) and by then, your wee (sorry!) will be diluted, making it sting much less AND stop that horrible nagging feeling that you need to go again. If this doesn't work, a hot water bottle on your tum for the time being and make an appt with your doc ASAP - if drinking water doesn't help, you need medical attention before it gets serious. Cystitis can begin to affect your kidneys - without trying to scare you, I promise I'm not trying to. To prevent future attacks, try go knickerless with a skirt around the house - let the air get to your bits. Try and avoid sanitary protection unless it is 100% necessary (I don't mean during your period, cos obviously it's necessary then!). Avoid tights and tight trousers. Wear cotton underwear when you can - I know it's not that sexy, but it's the best for you! Use an unscented, uncoloured shower gel, eg. Simple. Scents or colours can really affect the pH downstairs and cause cystitis or thrush, etc. Um...what else...wipe front to back - although I'm sure you've gotten onto that one already! Lastly, try and go to the loo before and after sex. It'll help flush out any bacteria that might have been transferred during it. Seriously, all these things have helped me 100% - I haven't just read them somewhere and passed the info on. Tried and tested! Feel better soon.

There's more than one kind of cystitis. Some forms are caused by irritating drugs, or by a condition called interstial cystitis, where the cause is unknown and treatment is difficult. Most cases of cystitis are caused by bacterial infections that tract up the urethra into the bladder. Women have about ten times as many cases as men, largely because their urethra's are only about 1/4 as long. Bacteria have a shorter trip from outside to inside in women.

One thing we know for sure that increases you chances of getting cystitis is simply not drinking enough fluids and/or not urinating often enough. Diluting the urine dilutes any bacteria present, and urinating often enough flushes them out. To help prevent urinary infections, and if you have one drink extra fluid to flush the organisms out.

Sex is another culprit, since bacteria can be passed from one partner to the other. In women, intercourse can "milk" bacteria into the urinary opening. In addition to good hygiene, urinating before and after intercourse is a good idea. Condom use may also help.

There are tons of over the counter and traditional ways of treating urinary infections. Lots of water is the cheapest and easiest. Cranberry juice works for many and so do some herbal remedies. You can also buy Azo Standard and some other products in the drug store. Azo soothes the pain and may make you more comfortable while you wait for a doctor's appointment.

You may try home rememdies but if you have any chronic health problems, or if you have severe or increasing pain, blood in the urine, fever, back or flank pain, or feel unwell, you need to give up the home tactics and get medical treatment. A bladder infection can spread to the kidneys and be very serious.

You can try drinking loads of water to flush out the infection. I know that the doctor recommends cranberry juice too. I drink this all the time now since I had cystitis to help prvent it as I know its awful. But I really think the only way is to visit the doctor and get some antibiotics to make sure the infection fully goes away. Hope you get better soon.

I has cystitis regularly throughout pregnancy. The best way to get rid of it is drinking lots of water to flush it out. I tried Cranberry juice but that didn't seem to have any effect. the sachets from pharmacy for cystitis that you7 mix with water seemed to work well. If its left untreated it can turn into a full blown infection.

Cystitis is usually due to an ascending urinary tract infection.
Drink lots and lots and lots of water (about 3 L)- as flushes out bacterial toxins, Cranberry juice and cranectin tablets will help too.
Alkaline solutions- readily available in pharmacies particularly for UTI
Antibiotics are still required to kill the active organisms, and prevent further ascension into your kidneys.
Take Augmentin 625 mg twice a day for 7-10 days.

Sex!!! Especially lots of it, especially after you havent done it for a while.

Always go to the toilet after sex, it will flush out all the bacteria that's been pushed into your bladder. Cranberry juice will keep your bladder healthy, have a glass every day.

At the first signs, you can flush it out by drinking a pint of water every hour. But if this doesn't work go straight to the doctor because it can get really bad.
