First, you should run the disk defragmenter. That can be found under the start menu, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defragmenter.

You should also do a virus scan (you should have an antivirus program running on your computer). A good free antivirus program is AVG, you can get it here for free... http://free.grisoft.com

While you are there, also download Ewido. It is a very good spyware removal tool.

Run both of those on your computer and clean any viruses/spyware that you find.

Go to your Windows XP Accessories > System Tools and run a disk cleanup. That should remove useless temporary files, which should free up a lot of space on your computer. You can also manually remove files you don't need. Clean up your programs.

Next, defragment your computer - again you can find it in System Tools in Accessories. Leave it for a couple of hours for the computer to defragment. This should give a little boost in the computer speed. Slightly.

Lastly, run a complete checkup for spyware and viruses. Sometimes, viruses and spyware can cause your PC to run slower than it should
