I have a stock (imaginary) of One Thousand Pound cheques.

1 cheque when cashed nets you one thousand pounds .

I propose to give you 1 (cheque) + 1 (cheque) + 1 (cheque) I reckon YOU would be able to tell me the total amount of cash you would receive for them.

However, since you appear to be poverty stricken in mental ability you would not appreciate my offer so I withdraw it.

The reason 1+1+1=3 is because it is defined as that. The most basic definition of the number 3 is 1+1+1.

If you have 1 of something, and then you add another 1, and then another 1, then you will have 1+1+1. It cannot logically be 1+1 or 1+1+1+1 or anything else. After that, it is just down to what you decide to call it, and our language calls it 'three' with the symbol 3.
