I have had different favourite authors growing up. At first, it was Enid Blyton and everything was just too good. Then Agatha Christie and I was a detective. Then it was intrigue and Helen McInnes. After that I went West with Louis Lamour and Oliver Strange and Zane Grey. In between I read a lot of Chase, Sheldon, Flemming and other racy books. Then I discovered Thomas Hardy and Tess, Bathsheba, Eustacia. I then got interested in horses and Dick Francis was just unputdownable. Right now I am going boldly where no man has gone before. I am reading Star Trek novels.
But I'd say, ever since I saw Rebecca on screen and then read it, I have read most of Daphne Du Maurier's books. You should try them sometime. Rule Britannia, what a title, what a story. Scapegoat, should be made into a movie. The House on the Strand, as good as any scifi. Romance and you have Frenchman's Creek, The Kings General, The Loving Spirit. You want macabre, you have Birds. You want sorrow you should read Hungry Hill.

It has to be JRR Tolkien. Why? Because of the vast world he created in Middle Earth. The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King takes us into another world--a world that sometimes is better than ours, sometimes worse than ours and sometimes the same as ours. He is a masterful writer and I can get lost for hours reading any of his books.
