Women go through the menopause, usually in their 40s or 50s and cease producing eggs at that time - so they can no longer conceive. Even before that, the eggs that they produce are not as "good" as those of a younger person - decreasing the chances of conception

Menopause can happen to a woman from as early as 35 years old. Menopause is when the body shuts down the normal system that allows a woman to concieve naturally. Science steps in and helps when this is a problem for someone who desperately wants a child. Personally I think 70 is way too old, it is bad enough coping with a young child when you are 30 let alone 70. Having had a child with a husband who is considered an 'older father' it is always in my mind that he may not be around when my youngest is in their 20's. I don't think it is fair for anyone to have a child past an age where the child will be left alone in their teens because the parent died of old age. Teenage children need a lot of guidance and understanding. Having a parent as old or older than a normal grandparent is not natural. Nature is natural and nature decided to invent menopause to allow women to rest, to stop breeding past the age of producing healthy eggs and also because nature knows that humans can't cope past a certain age.
I am all for IVF by the way....but under the right circumstances. Having had infertility problems myself I know how painful it is to try and fill the void left when you have conception problems.

I don't know, but I heard on the radio about a 63 year old woman that was going to have a baby and her husband was 61. I thought they'll never live long enough to see the child in high school, why in the world would they do that? Then I thought, well I'm glad it's them and not me because when I'm 63 the last thing I want to be doing is having a baby, I should be playing cards and all that good stuff.

You're not very old, are you? Women of that age can't concieve because they have been through the menopause. In other words they don't have the menstrual cycle any more and therefore don't produce eggs

Women go thru menopause and that is natural. It is natures way of ensuring that babies have their mothers with them until they are no longer dependent on her for survival.
Old people are not meant to have babies, that's just wrong.

Because nature decides that they can no longer cope properly, so the jolly old eggs have all gone past their sell-by date!
