Get the parents a gift voucher from a local baby supply store, and a basket full of baby goodies, eg, powders, wipes etc. It sounds silly, but new borns go through a lot of nappies etc, and the parents will be grate full for the extra supplies.
If the baby belongs to a close friend or relative, get a small gift with some significance. My Gran got my cousins and I each a little silver armband, with our names engraved on it. It doesn't fit anymore, but I like to still compare it next to wrists today and think: Wow, was I really that small!

the best gift you could give would be the gift of time. coming over and helping the new mom by doing laundry dishes cleaning etc would be wonderful for her! also maybe some home made frozen meals so mom doesn't have to worry about cooking. if you don't want to do anything like that diapers would be great id get size 1 or 2 because they don't stay in newborn very long! I loved it because when i had my daughter we didn't have to buy diapers for 3 months! and those things are expensive! One of the kits that has all baby toiletries in it are nice. also a gift basket of basic baby stuff is great! hope this helps!

I had a baby 16wks ago - Everyone bought me outfits for the baby. The problem was that in the first few weeks I was so inexperienced that he lived in a sleepsuit because I was too scared to dress him in these cute little outfits. Then we had the warmest summer on record and he spent the next 6weeks in pretty much just a nappy. Then he was too big for all these 'newborn' outfits!! So, my advice, don't buy an outfit.
My fav gift was a baby book bought by my mum - it meant I could record all those early precious moments. Don't forget to buy something just for mum - I think people forget her part in the process!!

well i'm a 17yr old..but i used to work in a nursery for about a year so i saw plenty of newborns.. but the best thing to get is "oneses" or how every they are spelled.. they snap at the crotch and make life a lot easier for mothers to change their children.. umm possibly get a gift certificate to a baby store so the mother could buy what she chooses. get binkys!!! well.. passifiers.. the mother will greatly appreciate. make sure you get the new born type tho.. some maybe too big for a baby's mouth. but since its a newborn.. i'd probably go with the "oneses" you cant go wrong with thaT!!! good luck!! and let me know wat u end up getting!
