Often thought that myself. Sheep

This is such a good question, and 1 I have often wondered about. Its true all little sub groups of students look the same. Its bizarre! Theyre so bothered about wanting to categorise themselves and be a bit diffrenent and they all end up looking the same. Goths are a prime example, skateboard dudes with their jeans around the bums.... whats that all about??

But I do think that the student years are the only time you can get away with being a pretentious **** and looking like a complete knob, but hey they are the future so hats off to the unwashed and wannabe differents!

The answer is that they don't wear clothes to be different. Most people are convergent thinkers and as a rule behave in order to be liked. While being different is the only truly great attribute of humanity, most people inhabit the realm of mediocrity, destined for obscurity, pretty much completely useless in every sense, except they procreate with the slim chance that their offspring might not be as worthless as them. These sorts, these "people," wouldn't dream of trying to look different. I'm talking about 99% of the population here. The other 1% have a glimmer of hope.

Most of the students are in the adolescence stage wherein they are still in the process of searching for their self identity and belongingness in a group.

It is in the wearing of weird clothes where they could easily be noticed and get the attraction of most people and in a way, this will boost their morale and gain self-confidence once they belong to a clique.

Do they choose to wear weird clothes? Or are the only clothes they can afford from charity shops that just look weird to us? Might explain why they all look the same!

I'm a student. I'm wearing jeans and a t-shirt. That doesn't exactly strike me as "weird." 'Course, I worked this morning, and my job requires pants and sleeved shirts, but the jeans are my favorite pair, as is the t-shirt.

*Shrugs* I wear what I find comfortable. If I end up looking like everyone else, fine, but rest assured that that isn't my intention.

I guess cos its the only time in their lives when they can get away with looking like a prat.

You can always tell a student from a mile off. It must be a kind of uniform thing so they recognise each other.

They are trying to be 'Out there' which is wierd as you say they all end up looking the same. I work in Edinburgh near the Edinburgh Uni flats and my god they are a popmous bunch. They all seem to incorporate that Mid Atlantic accent and sound like total yahs

It is their age!!!!!

This is the time when they are trying to define their identity...in the process they try things which others (read grownups ) are not doing.

so the weird clothes.

Poor fellows they believe they are the first teenagers of this world.

The cult of the individual, I suppose. I seen 3 or 4 goth/punk types about 18 years old - every one of them had dyed his/her hair the same colour of purple. I reckon they had spent all their funds on drink, and had to share the one bottle of hair dye. But fair play to them, who wants to walk around in blue and white nylon, day in, day out?
