It didn't. The amount you borrowed and the amount you paid are two different things, and the remaining debt can't be added to the change from your purchase.

You didn't spend the entire amount they lent you, but rather than giving it all back to them, you only paid them part of your change and kept the rest.

If you had given them $1.50 each, rather than keeping the $1, you would owe each of them half of $97, or $48.50.

You didn't do this. You gave each of them $1. So now you owe each of them $49. $49+1=$50 for each of them, or $100 for both. You don't add in the $1 in your pocket.

when u gave back 1 dollars to each of ur parent, u basically have 98 dollars to spend...so yes u have 1 dollar in ur pocket...and that will be the change after u buy the 97 dollars shirt....

You are adding to the groups misleadingly. If you give them 2 dollars the total amount owed is $98. You have 1 dollar.

And then they say figures do not lie. Yes there are a lot of those little math quirks out there. They are fun but most know the answer. incorrect use of math.
