You can fall on a step when going up the stairs but not fall all the way down.

If one is making their way down the stairs and falls, they fall "downstairs", if one is climbing the stairs and misses a step, causing them to trip, they fall "up" the stairs, as their body heads towards the upper steps, as apposed to the ones behind them. Of course, if the faltered step is so drastic as to make you fall back to the first step at the base of the stairs, then that would be considered falling "down" the stairs, regardless of the direction you were going!

Fun, eh?

;)

I do say it cause I have done it. Too many times to count. I have to say, it hurts less that way the falling down the stairs. LOL

Anyway, i think people say it cause of the direction they are going and the fact that they fall.

Been there-done that. If you are going up the stairs and fall, you fell up the stairs because your body is going up. Down, you were going down and ended down. Does that sound right?

I fell up the stairs, missed my footing and broke my arm.

So I say " I fell up the stairs" because I did.

you haven't ever tripped on a step and fell forward on a staircase? maybe this is what they are talking about. Going the opposite way is down the stairs.
