Back in the mid-to-late 70's, Mike Schmidt of the Philadelphia Phillies hit a ball so hard at the Houston Astrodome that it struck one of the speakers far atop the stadium with incredible force. Just to hit the speaker was a feat in itself. It had never been done before. Sports writers and other observers said that if the ball had not been deflected by the speaker, it would have been one of the longest home runs in the history of the game. Poor Shcmidt had to settle for a ground rule double. Since no one had ever hit one of the speakers before, the umps had to make an on-the-spot decision. After that incident, all of the Astrodome speakers were moved "out of range".

Tony mentioned Mickey Mantle's home run at the olld Griffith Stadium, that came to mind to me as well. Mantle also hit one off the facade in the old Yankee Stadium in 1963, narrowly missing being the only fair ball ever hit out that I have heard estimates that it would have travelled over 600 feet had the facade not stopped its progress. Some witnesses say the ball was still going up when it hit the facade.

I witnessed Barry Foote of the Chicago Cubs hit a homer that broke a window in one of the houses across Waveland Avenue back in, I believe, the late 70's possibly early 80's in a 22-23 game against either the Cardinals or the Phillies.
I also heard that both Greg Leuzinsky(sp?) and Ron Kittle also hit home runs on the roof of old Comiskey Park.

Mickey Mantle or Jason Giambi or Barry Bonds. Bonds hit a 600 ft homer during a practice game. it went over the stadium to the road near the giants's parking lot.

Reggie Jackson hit a homerun in an allstar game in detroit that looked like it was still rising when it hit a transformer on the top of the stadium. I believe that was probably the longest homerun ever hit.

I did it against the Washington Senators.....measured 565 feet...talk about hitting the "sweet spot" it did that time and a couple of more times during my career but that was my longest that was measured.....I can't imagined how many more I would have hit had it not been for my bum legs and my drinking but I guess I did provide some entertainment to some folks and hopefully you got a chance to watch me play some......GO YANKEES! STINKIN RED SOX!!
