14 people killed in a bomb attack in Turkey last night - 5 of them children. Yet the news headlines are instead dominated by Big Brother and Britney Spears - is there something wrong here?

Poppet - I have lived in the States! I know it is hard to know on here what people are basisng some of their comments and opinions on, but I for one am not making assumptions about things I don't know.

I do agree that British papers are full of sh*t most of the time - which is why I turn to the BBC quite often for decent relevant news..... But the BBC is going the same way.

It's not just on the crap GMTV style news it's not reported. I hadn't heard about the bombing until I read this post, so went to BBC news website, and it took me a while to find it on there. Steve Irwin's memorial is bigger news too. Kurdish kids just don't sell papers these days.

Oh now I have lived in the states and was dumbfounded when I saw headlines in British papers. It seems celeb weight gain or loss, who's shagging who, who won footie or any other silliness takes presidence over serious things in England.

American newspapers are all doom and gloom on the other hand. I would bet that each major paper (if they even knew about it) had this as the biggest headline for the day.

It really bothers me that so many people are constantly putting down the states. Unless you have lived there and really have an understanding of the culture and ways I think you should stay quiet.
Yes they have their little quirks but so do any other country.
For the most part the people there are honest and hard working, love thier families, enjoy spending time with friends, watch tv, listen to music, take showers, grocery shop and do all the same things that you do and worry about the same things as you do.

Time to sit back and look at those glass walls you are all b******* inside of.

I am not an expert but I think the news can't continually report bad news or people will react with depression. Take for instance when 9/11 happened. I watched the news I think for 2 weeks straight. First time I ever saw continued programming with no commercials. Although I wanted to know what was going on, when the stations tried to go back to a bit of normalcy, it was almost a relief to see a commercial. Like a moment where the tragedy wasn't consuming you. Unfortunately, if the news media was to report of every state, every homicide, every bad thing that has gone on in one day, the news would be Hours long, instead of the hour it is. just my opinion.

Actually, 3,500 kids die every day, 365 days of the year. By the time you read this, at the end of the list of other answers, a dozen kids are dead. All day all night, 24 /7
If anything, the number goes up every week...
If you pay attention, the enormity of the situation gets overwhelming.

News in Turkey is cold Turkey,
News in the USA is present day.
What can you and I say???
Except…perhaps to pray…
For the souls of innocent deaths each day.

This happens all the time....

We have wars, people being murdered etc etc...then you get the Beckams or some other "celebrity" on the front of your morning paper.

The world has truly gone MAD!!

Just another example of the how our society has decayed to the level it has. "Western societies are in absolute decomposition. There is no longer a vision that we are a collective consciousness. "A society without strong beliefs, is a society about to die." There seems to be growing evidence of that on a daily basis.
