I myself am TERRIFIED of spiders! its about 4 a.m in NYC and I saw one crawling on the wall while I was listening to some music and I flipped out, I woke up everyone in my house (not cool) and No I can't shake the feeling that there are more. I'm too nervous to go to sleep and I can't for the life of me figure out why people are afraid of spiders. I mean the ones that we have are relativley small and they just hand around, literally. But I am so scared of them, for me personally its all the legs, anything with more than 2 legs thats not a cat or a dog, freaks me out. Is that a reason some of my aracnaphobic out there ahte spiders? Is there an official reason? All opinions are welcome!

I think you're right Mack. It's all the legs. I was living alone once and saw a spider and the little guy had me holed up a corner for 2 days.....no sleep.....no food.....nothing. I wouldn't kill him though. And when you see those hairy ones.....OMG.
I don't think it's an officially recognised phobia.......just a dislike of creepy-crawlies. Good question, though...

It's a psychological state of mind. I almost lost my leg to a venemous spider bite. I carry scars from it. i also carry scars from horses, snakes, dogs, and other animals. Despite the damage, I still love and respect animals.
fear can be overcome by choice. A famous freestyle Motor cross rider once said, "Feel the fear. Then do it anyway."
I am not afraid of anything because I decided to overcome every fear. I swam with ragged-tooth sharks. I catch snakes with my bare hands (been bitten twice!). Fear is a mindset. The more you learn about an animal, the less you fear about it.
Peopel are programmed to fear what they dont know or understand. People also are programmed to fear what others fear. The media (especially television and movies) are also responsoble for alot of what people fear. Since JAWS, more people fear sharks than most things, although they have a greater chance of being hit by a falling coconut and dying like that!
Do yourself a favour. Be brave. Find a bok on spiders. Try to identify the spiders. Next time you see a spider, try identify it according to the book. If it is harmless, PICK IT UP! it cant hurt you and it is more hygenic than a dog or cat. Fear is a mindset!
DONT KILL SPIDERS!!! You shouldn't kill anything you aren't going to eat! (unless it's in defence!

Perhaps because we seldom see them and they do look intimidating by the way they move.
I too was afraid of spiders as a kid. I would take my shoe off and throw it at them or go and get a fly swatter, because I figured every one I killed was one less for me to worry about.
One time in scouting the boys I was assigned to wanted to study spiders. So, reluctantly I went to the library and got books about spiders and began to learn about them so they could earn the honor.
The more I learned about them the more amazed I was at how much good they do. They eat millions of bugs everyday that would otherwise be in our face, in our food, in our house, you name it.
They have some very clever ways of catching their food and maybe the idea that some tiny little creature survives by catching and eating other creatures has some part in making them intimidating.
I began to lose my fear of them. I still don't want them crawling on me but, at least I am not terrorized by them.

It's the legs for me too. Ewww! I'm sure it's always been around, but I think it's been somewhat intenisified by the movie "Arachnaphobia". I think a lot more people became aware of it. Maybe :o)

because they are so damn ugly, and some have the ability to cause you pain from a venemous bite. If they couldn't bite you, I think people would be less afraid of them. They'd be more on the level of cockroaches - more a "eww!" thing than an "iieee!" thing.

it's kinda natural for girls to be afraid of bugs cuz ya'll be acting so cute and vulnerable and shiiitt. but yo why be scared of something thats so much smaller than you huh?
just crush them if they try to violate you otherwise let them go about their business.
