I can never tell what they say.. is it just like "hey that was wrong" or "get glasses" or that sort of thing, or do they say bad words and the like?

You are not allowed to address the umpire regarding balls and strikes - arguing balls and strikes is grounds for immediate ejection. You can mutter stuff under your breath, but if the umpire interprets it wrong, they will throw you out of the game.

You can talk to the catcher all you want, but if it's Michael Barrett, watch what you say or you might get decked.

On a swinging strike three, the player will very often turn around to the umpire to ask if the pitch was a strike.

If you strike out swinging, sometimes you just want to know that you swung at a good pitch that would have been called a strike if you hadn't swung.

If he wants to stay in the game, he doesn't say very much. An umpire can eject a manager or player for arguing balls and strikes --- period. Most do allow a small comment now and then, but if the player persists or says something insulting, he's likely to get an early shower.

Most never say anything.

Some will say "that was high, outside, low", or "no", or possibly "you missed that one". Some have said to me " That was the one I should have hit"

If they say much more than that (at least when I'm calling) they will become a spectator!

Usually by the second time at bat, they swing more, and take fewer called strikes.

Most of the time they argue as to whether or not it was a strike. Often though, if they swing and miss, they will ask the ump is it was a strike they swung at.

He may ask where the pitch was located, but if he argues or says certain "key phrases" he will get tossed.
He may just be mad at himself for swinging at a bad pitch.

Most players will ask where the pitch was, and not in a snotty way. Others will complain about the pitch.

Batter: "You're missing a good game, blue!"

Umpire: "Yeah, but they scheduled me to call this one instead..."
