12 pears = 8 oranges (1)
3 apples = 20 oranges (2)
x apples = 12 pears (3)
x apples = 12 (8/12) ornages "from (1)"
x apples = 12 (8/12) (3/20) apples "from (2)"
x = 12 (8/12) (3/20)
x = 1.2
therfore, 1.2 apples = 12 pears

The answer is 6/5 or 1 & 1/5 (one & one fifth) apples equals 12 pears.
To make it easier to understand, say:
1 pear = 3gr, then 12 pears would be 36gr.
So, if 12 pears = 8 oranges, 8 oranges must weigh 36gr.
If 8 oranges weigh 36gr, 1 orange weighs one eighth of this, which is 4 & 4/8 or 4 & 1/2.
20 x 4 &1/2 = 90gr.
You say that 3 apples equals this, so 1 apple must weigh 30gr. & 1 pear weighs 3gr.
12 pears 36gr, divide this by 30gr,(which is weight of 1 apple,)
That's 1 & 6/30, or, 1 &1/5.

12 pears = 8 oranges.
1 orange=12/8 pears
Now, 1 orange = 3/20 apple
<=> 8 oranges =3/20 *8 =24/20 apple =1.2 apples
<=>12 pears = 1.2 apples.

(i) 12p = 8o,
(ii) 3a = 20o,
from (ii) 3a = 20o,
(3/20)a = o,
8*(3/20)a = 8o, -> (multiply by 8)
(24/20)a = 8o,
(6/5)a = 8o.
to (i) 12p = 8o,
12p = (6/5)a.
so 6/5 apple(s) weigh the same as 12 pears.
