It means to take a look at yourself, both as others may see you and as you so intimately know yourself, and take into consideration your talents and gifts as well as your shortcomings. It means to know what areas you need to improve upon as well as what areas you should not ignore.
It is just a way of telling a person he should be aware of who he is, where he came from, and where he is going.

That's actually two words. I believe it means to understand your own mind. Your compulsions, your own idiosyncrasies, your own biases. This was said by an anthropologist by the name of I don't remember, but means to understand who you are and your cultural biases in order to objectively examine another culture.

Know your body, mind, ability, weakness, relationship with people around thus understand yourself is not something exists independently but, in relation to somany other factors and also understand your reactive pattern to external stimuli.
