I moved into my new house about 4 months ago. since we moved we've seen our fair share or spiders, maybe about 8 or 9 biggies throughout the house. However, last night i had to kill 3 huge floor spiders in my living room, all in the space of an hour. You know the type, that run really fast across the floor and make u jump. I know this is the time when the big ones come out in the uk, but has any1 else had a bad experience like this, or have i got an infestation? They appear to be coming from behind the telly, and i have wooden flooring, which is perhaps why i notice them. has any1 any tips, im really upset! Boo Hoo :-(

I had exactly the same problem in a house I moved into a few years ago. The spiders were so big and so fast that it got to that stage I was terrified to even enter the house. It also had wooden floor boards with big gaps in the skirting boards and I used to see them running in and out of them. I have now totally solved my problem but it took a bit of effort.
I carpeted the floors upstairs, and laid lino on the bathroom floor. I filled in all the gaps in the wooden floors downstairs with wood filler so their refuges were limited.
It's important to dust and hoover regularly, getting into all corners, nooks and crannies, not only getting rid of spiders lurking there, but also gets rid of their food sources.
Someone told me that spiders dont like the smell of chestnuts so every autumn I gather conkers and put them in bowls around every room, under furniture and into corners.
It appears to be working. I rarely ever see a spider now and before this I was getting 2 or 3 big hairy monsters every day. I was terrified even to go to bed and kept thinking they were crawling over me. I just noticed a spider repellent spray for sale at £3.99 in the Betterware catalogue so I've ordered some of that too.
Hope some of these tips work and good luck - you have my sympathy on this one!

I had the same problem when I was living in my Mom's basement a year or so ago. A huge infestation of wolf spiders. I'm an entomologist and am not particularly afraid of creepy crawlies, but it is still upsetting to have to worry about navigating your way to the bathroom in the dark, with the chance of stepping on one of them.... :)
The first step you want to take is to identify any access points they may be using to come in from the outside. Cracks in the foundation, little-used drains, loose insulation, etc. Put screens on the windows. Be sure that you don't have organic material--bushes and trees, wood piles, mulch, etc.--right next to the house, and inspect any plants or firewood that you bring into the house. Vacuum and dust the house often and thoroughly, and clean up clutter which can be used as harborage.
Chemical control of spiders is usually not very useful--they're not like ants, which can be killed by any residual from a chemical that you sprayed hours ago. Unless you see a spider and spray it directly, it's generally not going to be affected by the pesticide. If you only ever see one or two, then this wouldn't be a problem, but if you're dealing with MANY spiders, it could get tiresome to have to seek out every one.
I say your best bet is to go with the sanitation and exclusion methods. Good luck!

If your house is only 4 months old, then you shouldn't be having spider problems already, and you need to contact the contracter that built your house. However, I live in the US and the rules may be different over here.
The best thing to do is to call an exterminator for an estimate (usually those are free), because he/she can come in, poke around, and tell you where they're coming from. From that point you can either chose to try and get rid of them yourself, or have the exterminator do it for you.
PS- cats LOVE spiders. Buy one or two, they'll catch them.
Good luck!

I have the same problem but my house is in the middle of nowhere and surrounded by fields which is why I think we get them,we have only lived here 4 months and I have never seen spiders as big and I hate them,I was mowing the lawn on Friday and I felt a tickle on my arm and looked down to see a massive spider!
I never knew mowing the lawn could be so traumatic!
I think it is just the time of year they are all coming in before the autumn sets in!

The big ones are females out looking males to mate with. As for infestation I have no idea how you would find out. Maybe you should move the telly and see if there are any holes or gaps in your flooring or possibly around the skirting board.
I had a big one on my stairs and it wouldn't let me past.

Spiders - yuk, and you are right, this time of year is the worst form them! I got a spray from somewhere like Bettaware that you spray where you they are coming in, as well as round window frames etc and it acts as a barrier (I think because of the smell it gives off) Seemed to work for me. I have also seen this electronic gadgets that give off a sound that spiders don't like, but I don't know if they work! Good luck...

There was a bit about spiders on the tv the other day. It is because we have had a long extra hot summer. They have been able to grow to their full size. So basically we can see them better. The price we are paying for good weather........ The only consolation is they live on flys, so we havn't got flys the size of sparrows.

We get them here too, I've seen some that I swear looked like tarantulas, just big *** wolf/field spiders though. Try calling an exterminator. My mom swears by moth balls, but I can't stand the smell, nor is it good for animals/kids. I don't like them, and I'm fine as long as I don't see them, but they are good for getting rid of bugs. I usually will just shoo them outside, while I'm jumping around and "ewwww"ing :)

They're more scared of you!
The wooden flooring may have given them a home though. Perhaps winter will naturally curtail them. They don't live too long though. And they can be cannibalistic.
Why not leave them - they will take care of the woodlice and other creepy crawlies?
