It's not illegal, in the sense that there is generally no statute prohibiting it. Of course, laws vary by state and jurisdiction.
What a sign does is serve as notice that the person is unwelcome, and therefore considered a trespasser should anything happen. Without the sign, the legal status is less clearly defined, and that can open the homeowner to some civil liability issues. And "No Trespassing" is clearer and less ambiguous than "No Soliciting".

I think we have all missed the point of the original question - Is there a law against people knocking on your door? The answer is simple - No! There is no law to criminalize or prevent people from knocking on your door. If you post a No Solicitation sign that means you don t want to be bothered by sales persons but it does not prevent or deter a person from bringing you FREE information in the form of a flyer or pamphlet. If you post a No Trespassing sign then that tells the person that they are not welcome and if they fall or injure themselves on your property they have no recourse because they were not specifically invited to visit your property. While this solution may be over simple you can place a simple sign on your door or above your door bell the reads as follows: "Please do not leave information or flyers at this address. I am not interested in any religious or commercial information that I have not specifically requested. Thank you for your understanding." While this will not deter the unprofessional or illiterate it will give you a basis point for your indignation when you answer the door and refer to the posted message. At this point you can determine if they are illiterate in which case no sign with any message would have mattered or if they are ignorant and disrespectful which is justification to demand that they leave your property immediately.
As regards a business this is a different matter. There is no protection from Business-to-Business marketing but you can post a No Soliciting sign to prevent sales people from harassing your employees or customers. I hope this helps everyone.

Solitation laws aren't Federal. Your County Seat or City determines what solicitors are able to do and the burden of prosecution falls on you. It's possible you can press criminal charges against missionaries if you've clearly posted a sign rebuking solicitors. Check your local laws.

As a Jehovah's Witness, I can tell you how to have your house no longer called upon. You would need to call the local Kingdom Hall at a time when a meeting is being held. Now, I am asking you to please show the same kindness and mildness that is shown at your door when you make this phone call, please? Ask for one of the Elders and just simply give him your name and street address and request that your house number be listed as a DO NOT CALL ON THIS HOUSE . He will make sure then , that your house is not called upon . Now, in a matter of maybe 5 -8 years, someone might check, in case you have moved and someone more receptive has moved in, but that is more like a check up, you understand?
So , now without hatred and venom and all that getting started, that is the easiest way to handle the situation. With calmness, coolness and a straight forward attitude.
But, just for a reminder to you, we are only doing what we are told to do before Christ can come back for his 2nd time and instill his new heavens and his new earth as stated at Acts 20:20. its a work that has to be done, and if we humans can't get it done, Jehovah has said he would even let it fall to the rocks to do his preaching work. I think that might be scarier than a few witnesses at your door, don'tchya think?? LOL I do!!

Hey Jehovah s Witness. No solicitation means GO AWAY. Pretty simple. You are not welcome or ANYONE that feels they can disrupt MY HOME by ringing my doorbell for their own guilt driven or petty needs. This is why they have churches or store fronts. I pay an association fee for this privilege. What give you the right to infringe in my rights and my home. Your god? My god says respect other peoples privacy.

Nothing, short of a machine gun pit manned 24 hours a day, will stop these religious maniacs knocking on your door (and even then they will try to sneak past it)
