Why is "S" used to represent Distance and/or Displacement in Formulae?

It refers to "space" (distances and displacements refer to space).
["D" is usally used to represent "diameter"]

Somebody well trained in physics can tell you in a few words about the principle of space to which the distances and the displacements are it's measurable dimensions.

Because all other alphabets in diStance except S are assigned to some other quantums.

I think this comes from German "sitzung" = position.
