The longer I watch hockey, I become convinced that bad general management stems from bad ownership. Jeremy Jacobs in Boston, Charles Wang in Long Island, Bill Wirtz in Chicago and Ed Snider in Philly are just lousy from the top down.
Having said that, yes, I DO think Bob Clarke is the worst GM in hockey. Look at last offseason. After a lockout, the NHL amends the rules of the game to reward speed and skill, especially on the blue line, where the first pass out of the zone can theoretically go 3/4 of the length of the ice.
So what does Clarke do? He signs Hatcher, Rathje and Therien, three of the biggest, slowest defensemen you can find in the league, all of whom have limited tape-to-tape passing skill. If these signings aren't a sign of the game of ice hockey having passed him by, I don't know what is.
I hate to say this, because I was a Flyers fan growing up in the Philadelphia area, the first hockey game I ever watched being the Flyers beating the Atlanta Flames in game 1 of the 1974 Stanley Cup Quarterfinals (Clarke was the captain then), but as long as Ed Snider and Bob Clarke are running the front office of the Flyers, they'll never come close to winning a Stanley Cup.
FYI: Anson Carter signed a one-year deal with Columbus today.

1.9M offer sheet to Kesler is definitely nuts, I won't even discuss it. Looks like GM Clark has produced enough impression of credibility with whoever among Flyers owners he answers to. What matters to me is that Clark is a big baby and frequently seems to say or do something emotional rather than logical and he keeps proving it ever since Lindros situation.
I do not have a big problem with DiPietro's deal. 4.5 million per year will be worth less and less every year. Although he is not worth that sum right now, DiPietro is a quality goalie with a lot of potential. The main problem of the Islanders is that they committed to someone who is not an established star for the rest of his career. A 15 year contract in general is a lot of risk no matter who signed it, be it Roman Cechmanek or Wayne Gretzky. So if you offer a 15 year contract to someone, that someone better be an established star with a consistent performance, and that just can't be said about DiPietro. I am not saying that DiPietro won't be a star and remain inconsistent, but in his case a 5 year contract for 25 million or so would make a lot more sense. I think however, Islanders management thinks that 4.5 million a year will not be the same money in a few years from now and if things go bad with DiPietro they will be able to trade him.

Yes. I agree with your assessment about putting out a 1.9 million offer sheet for a 10 goal scorer. To pay Kesler 1.9 over anson Carter 1.8 makes no sense to me. When you take a look at the Flyers' payroll how much sense does it make to pay Derian Hatcher and Mike Rathje 3.5 million a year each? What Bob Clarke has got to come to terms with is this is not the 1970's. If he could he would like to build a team of the same mold as the Broad Street Bullies.

I think Garth Snow just made the worst deal in the history of the Islanders with the Rick DiPietro deal (15 years and 67 million dollars). What the hell was he thinking? Yes he was the #1 overall pick in 2000. He played on a sorry Team USA in Turin. They haven't won a playoff series since he has been there. Is this guy worth that?

Bobby Clarke is a royal anal orifice!! But what I don't understand about it--Dave Nonis is ticked because Clarke offered this deal to Kessler, he even pointed out that Kessler is only a 10 goal scorer, he's not worth that much--if Nonis truly feels that way then WHY did he match the offer? Let Clarke have him if Nonis doesn't feel he is worth that much!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure Mike Milbury was the worst, and I want to give Snow a chance before I say anything, butthe Islanders have had a string of horrible GMs

He's definitely one of 5 worst I'd have to say. But anyone associated with the Blackhawks organization has to be the worst. It doesn't matter who the Hawks bring in, Bill Wirtz and Bob Pulford are the one's calling the shots.

I will never forgive him for sending Renberg to Tampa as compensation for signing Gratton. It doesn't matter who he got, you just don't break up the Legion of Doom line for anyone.
Not to mention that his thinking is stuck in the 70's. Even I think the Broad Street Bullies are old. Let them rest and build a new legacy.
