It all depends on how old you are, what your hobbies are and if this is your first time visiting Jakarta. But herewith a list of things to do generally: (not in any particular order)
- Kemang, where the hippest cafes and nightlife are (famous with the local celebs).
- Monas (National Monument), is probably the most recognized object in Jakarta
- Sudirman (CBD), where all the skyscrapers are. Probably the most modern part of Jakarta. This is where the best malls are located at: Plaza Indonesia, EX and Plaza Senayan
- Pancoran (Chinatown), everything Chinese. You can still see old Dutch buildings in this part of town.
- Mangga Dua, where you can find the cheapest anything. Computers, electronic products, home products, pirated DVD's, games and cd's, etc
- Ancol, for the amusement park ,the underwater aquarium and the marina.
- Menteng, or the ambassadors' row. Most expensive residential part of Jakarta. (ministers, ambassadors, and local businessmen)
- Bogor, a two hour ride away from Jakarta, for its national park, the largest in the vicinity, and its safari, the only one in Indonesia.
- Pulau Seribu, a two hour boat ride away from Jakarta, for its beaches and water sports.
More tidbits:
April - October is the summer season and the rest of the year is the rainy season.
Jakarta's traffic is a killer, try to plan everything with the traffic in mind.
Do not be flashy in outward appearance as it will attract unwanted attention.
US$1 = Rp 9,100 (most everything in Indonesia can be bargained, so asking won't hurt).
Visa on arrival costs USD 35 (obtained on arrival prior to immigration counters).
Tip guidelines:
Restaurants usually include a 5% service charge, if it doesn't, then do the 5% yourself.
Hotels/Airports: Rp 5,000 - Rp 10,000

1. Visit the malls. The major ones are also the biggest and the coolest! (I prefer Mall Kelapa Gading)...
2. Eat as much as you can! Where ever it is, just do it!
3. Go to Ancol, the biggest theme park in Indonesia. Or the only (good) one?
4. Go to Jalan Surabaya for antiquities and stuff.
5. Go to the movies! The tickets are just 25.000 rupiah... But they sensor some things from the movies...
6. If you go in 2007, watch the Asian Cup games, but especially the finals! (If you go, I'll see you there!)
7. Go to national sites, like the Museum, Monas, etc.
8. Take cabs.
9. Get some rest from time to time. You can't shop, eat and party non-stop... (remember the heat and maybe jetlag)
10. Enjoy.
Extra: Visit the Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands)... You can go to Anyer also, (it's 2-3-4 hours driving, but people are afraid of tsunami threat)...
