I have very soft, brittle fingernails. I have never been able to grow them out very long. What could I do to make them grow thicker and longer?

Take a vitamin E supplement (orally). When you put on hand lotion apply it to your cuticles and nails too. Try putting just a ton of lotion on your hands and then put on gloves or mittens. Sleep with the lotion and the mittens. Your hands and nails will be a lot nicer in the morning, or in the evening if you happen to work graveyard. Sometimes clear polish can make them a little tougher to grow longer too.

Use a nail polish with garlic extracts. Take vitamin e pills. Here, read this:

My fingernails are very thin, with vertical ridges that make them split. Is there anything I can do to strengthen my nails and prevent this from happening?

Like gray hair and fine wrinkles, nail ridges that run from the cuticle to the tip are often a sign of aging. As we get older, the nail bed becomes drier, making these lines more prominent. Ridges can also result from improper grooming. But no matter what's causing your nail woes, you can take steps to remedy them.

Moisturize your hands and nails often with a shea butter--or petroleum-based formula, and always wear gloves to wash dishes. Protect nails from injury: Avoid metal instruments that push back your cuticles. "Enjoying a diet rich in biotin--a B vitamin found in cauliflower, egg yolks, and walnuts--will help strengthen your fingernails," says Prevention advisor Mary Lupo, MD, a clinical professor of dermatology at the Tulane University School of Medicine.

However, if you're also experiencing extreme fatigue, weight gain, or nail discoloration, check with your physician. You may have impaired kidney or thyroid function.
