A protein naturally found in milk may improve sleep quality and next day alertness, according to
a new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Milk contains a protein alpha-lactalbumin, rich in tryptophan, that tells the brain to sleep. Plus you wake up feeling rested the next morning, without the side effects that often come with sleep-inducing drugs.
Milk's sleep-inducing properties have been documented for centuries. Dating back to 1500 BC, the oldest medical text — which forms the basis of Indian Ayurvedic medicine — advises poor sleepers to drink a glass of milk before bed.
An estimated 126 million adult Americans regularly experience symptoms of insomnia. Sleep deprivation is a rampant problem among teens, and has been shown to cause difficulties in school, including disciplinary problems, sleepiness in class and poor concentration.
The good news is that relief may be found in the refrigerator, not the medicine cabinet. At bedtime try drinking milk instead of taking a pill. It doesn't have to be a glass of white milk. Flavored milk, hot chocolate or a bowl of cereal all work.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland of the brain and keeps our wake-sleep cycle in perfect synch with day and night. It is made in the body from the amino acid l-tryptophan and our levels tend to decline with age. Melatonin is also a powerful anti-oxidant.
Melatonin levels should be lowest during the middle of the day and highest at night.
Melatonin resets our internal body clocks, making it a very useful supplement for shift workers and travellers suffering from jet lag and is also sometimes used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder or SAD.
Amounts as low as 0.3mg have been shown to improve sleep patterns, helping people sleep better, fall asleep faster and have higher energy and alertness levels upon waking.
Doses vary between 0.25 and 5mg, taken 30 to 60 minutes before bedtime. It is available in capsules or tablets, and even time release formulas which prevent the hormone levels from peaking too soon.
You can find Melatonin at any vitamin or health food store.

Whenever I have trouble sleeping, it's because I am excited about something. But other times when I have problems sleeping, i shower then go straight to bed, it feels great between your bed sheets just after a nice warm shower. don't go too hot because you can hurt your skin. I'm only 14, and if it is a night before school, well I sleep sort of late anyways, but I read. Reading make you sleepy if you read in bed, so maybe you should try that. Try books by J.R Tolkien, or Margret Clark (i dnt know who 2 spell hew name.
my dad drinks some kind of mil and honey drink and when i do that, it works most of the time. and dnt 4get 2 turn off ur light! lol. but i sleep with a light on. im not scared of the dark, i just like heaps of light at night but dark rooms during the day. weird isnt it?

i rarely have a problem falling asleep, so all i can say is to try to keep your mind blank. whenever i go to bed, my brain just kind of zones out & i fall asleep within minutes. if you're not really active during the day, try exercising or something so that you use up your energy and are ready for sleep by night. :P
keeping the lights off and your eyes closed helps too. if you don't have lots of noises & lights around, it makes it easier to keep your mind blank. actually, another way you could try to keep your mind blank is to concentrate on one thing. like, just imagine pitch black emptiness. don't let your mind wander, whenever you start thinking about something else, steer yourself back to the emptiness. as a kid i used this technique to control what i dreamed about at night. :)

I happened to me a lot. It's when you have lots of things in your mind. Find a way to relax your mind and stop thinking on something. How about you think this, " i'll just think this one in the morning", that way you will have a peace of mind knowing you'll worry and deal it in the morning.
