Yes, celebrities are usually very overrated.
I have come across many of them --movie stars -actors and actresses and haven't found much of interest. Yes, some of them are more beautiful but that doesn't put them beyond human limits. People rush towards them just to take a glimpse, a touch, an autograph, a photograph...etc. The scene is very pathetic.
I don't like this attitude, in three dimensions they are as human as anyone of us. It would be better if we show so much love and affection to our friends and family.

The news media plays a role in that. It also has to do with the amount of money they make..so they are waited on hand and foot while their heads and ego's swell...while the rest of us have to bust our a** out there to make a living...I like entertainment, but the idea of someone getting 20 million dollars for playing dress up and make believe astounds me...

There is too much emphasis, I agree. They become 'role models' or 'heros' when they are normal people who are good looking or good at sport.
