if the community cards show: Ac, Kh, 10s, 8d, 7c
and i have: Kc, 3d
my friend : Kd, 4d
is this a split pot as i assumed because the best 5 cards are with the community cards. or does my friend win because he has a higher kicker?

Yes, it is a split pot - that much everyone has told you so far. And they have even told you "WHY". ... But what I'm wondering here is if they really presented it to you (i.e. an obvious novice) in a way that you can quickly figure it out the next time around, especially if you need to "see" it in a pressure-cooker situation. Look, it's really VERY simple: If the smallest community card is bigger than both your kickers and the other two cards are equal then it's a split pot (given the specific scenario of your example, of course). Keep in mind, this sort of thing can only become second nature to you with experience, so Practice, Practice, Practice. Then read a couple of good books and back to Practice, Practice, Practice. and so on .......... In time, simple observations like realizing that no one can have a flush, if there are not three community cards of the same suit showing, all become automatic and mindless to you, if you will. Hence, you can spend your energy concentrating on more important stuff, such as the overall play strategy, reading tells, working out the odds, playing the players and not just the cards, and other fancier and more advanced stuff. As I'm sure you already realize, Texas hold 'em is the greatest game on Earth, so keep playing, have fun and Good Luck.

Yup its a chop pot, because you have to play your best 5 card hand no matter what, so you both have a pair of k-a-10-8-7. I f the river was a 2 then the kicker would play.

It's a split pot. Your friend cannot use his four because your seven is higher.
