Typically marriage between first cousins in not allowed unless you are pregnant and have doctors proof that you are in georgia.Also they're is a common misconception about the likelyhood that you will end up with kids that have medical problems a non-related couple has a 2-3% chance where a related by second cousins couple has a 3-4% chance.A related couple is also less likely to end up having lots of miscarriages.

your cousin is your cousin no matter what side of the family it is on... why would you want to marry a family member in the first place, that is just sick

First cousin? NO. The laws vary from state to state but generally for it to be legal there must either be no proof of shared blood (step family for example) or else third cousin relation or further.

Side of the family doesn't matter. It is only in certain states where cousin marriage is legal, and there is ALWAYS a risk of mental retardation and other problems in offspring if cousins procreate.

It's legal and safe to marry your second cousin. I believe that marrying your first cousin is considered too closely related to be safe, and that it's illegal. Doesn't matter which side.
