Of Mice and Men, Oblomov, great Russian novel by Turgenev.
On a lighter note, how about the Flashman series (the Victorian adventurer) by George MacDonald Fraser. Therese Racquin by Emile Zola. Babbitt, by Sinclair Lewis(?) Crime and Punishment.
Faulkner novels. (You know characters named Mink and Eula Snopes evolve from a shallow gene pool!)
Well, these are off the top of my head. I'm sure there are tons.
No short stories come to mind at the moment...oh, somebody said Flannery O'Connor. She wrote a great story about a girl named Hulga who had a false leg....
A Fun Question!!

Any of Pratchett's Discworld novels starring Rincewind.
Bridget Jones' Diary. (Seriously, the movie made her look like a rocket scientist as compared to the book.)
