I got the vacuum for free from a friend because I didn't have one. It kind of works, but it spits some of the dirt/particles as I vacuum. It takes FOREVER to vacuum a small room with this problem. What's wrong? How do I fix it?

A friend gave it to me when she moved. I checked the bag and it's new. I cleaned the brush (it's an upright), removed all the hair and lint and debris, and it STILL spits stuff. It's a little better, but not not much.

The vacuum sucks air through a tube which eventually terminates in the bag. It is possible that the tube is clogged, most likely with hair or rug fibres, somewhere between the pickup brush and the bag. Check the entire path. It could also be that the head is not positioned close enough to the floor; drop the head down by turning the knob to "bare floors" or "low". Finally, it could be that the bag is simply too full; replace it.

Check that the bag is not full, or has too much debris in it. They usually start performing poorly when the bag is only half full or less. Change the bag.
If it has a powered beater bar, check that it is spinning. If it is not, it is either bound up from hair and long fibers wound around the brush bar, or the drive belt is broken or worn. You may need to replace the belt. They are usually not expensive. I have to replace ours every couple of months.
Turn the machine over when it is running and see if the beater bar is spinning.

Try removing the bottom of it to expose the fan, maybe that has hair wraped around it or some other material.

Let me guess..
You boyfriend gave you his old vacuum cleaner.
It's simple... you boyfriend gave you the vacuum cleaner because he doesn't need it anymore, he has ..YOU now.
Probably he used the vacuum cleaner to MASTURBATE and the semen makes the paper bag wet and it broke down.
Just get a new paper bag for the vacuum cleaner, and keep it away from your boyfriend...He may look for it, when you have your ..PERIOD...!!!
