I'd allow at least three weeks for it to be fully into your system.
And make sure you take it everyday.

It really depends on the type of pill you are taking. I've taken at least four different kinds and they all said something different. However I know for sure it takes longer than the first night. Think about it, the hormone has to build up in your system in order to do what it's supposed to be doing. You don't swallow the pill and then suddenly become infertile within a few hours.
The quickest one is the progesterone only pill, but you also have very little room in missing a dose. Read the instructions you get in the pill pack and follow the instructions.

First, read the info that came with your pack.
To answer your question, you must use back up protection for two full months after starting the pill.
Also, if you miss pills, call your pharmacist for advice, and use back up as long as advised. FYI: if you miss one day, you can take two the next day with no ill effect.

The pill is effective at least 4 months after you have taken it, usually they say in the first 30 days but don't believe that you still have to have other protection..you should have that anyway..good luck..

It depends. It is effective the first day if you are a day 1 start. Meaning if you take your first pill of your first pack on the first day of your period. If you start taking the pill any other time, it takes 7 days to have full protection.

most packets say 3 weeks to get the hormones in your system but i would complete a full cycle of pills first-and unless your married or in a serious relationship (and even then) use condoms-Trojan has these new ones out that have little stimulating grooves on them that hit the spot- so to speak-

I tell my patients to wait to have unprotected sex until they have used one whole cycle of pills.
Read your insert on your particular script for details.
