Homemade playdough is the BEST! It's much cheaper than buying it, it's really easy to make, and it will last for quite a while if you seal it up when he's done playing. http://www.kinderplanet.com/playdo.htm

When I was that age, I lived for fingerpainting. I used a paint shirt (One of my mom's old ones that I wore backwards) so I didn't ruin my clothes, and newspapers to cover the table (and floor, sometimes!). The important thing is to get non-toxic paints.

Do you like to bake? I used to get to help my mom make cookies (stirring in the chocolate chips!), which was fun...especially because we got to eat them when they were done!

You could get washable window markers and let him decorate some low windows in your house... you could do this together and change it for different seasons or holidays.

At the preschool I worked at, we would have the kids make their snacks into art projects. One I remember was decorating a slice of peanut butter toast so that it became a reindeer with pretzels for antlers (around christmas). Ants on a log are always fun to make too (celery filled with peanut butter and topped with raisins).

Take a piece of paper and an old crayon with you and go for a walk. Look for interesting textures on buildlings, benches, etc. and make etchings of them by putting the paper on the surface and rubbing the crayon over it. You could even cut these out later and use them for texture in a collage.

Your son could help you make a photo album of the family and his life so far. It's a great way to help him connect to family members he might not see very often!

i have a four yr. old grandson, he likes to play toys, but i notice he is also an artist in his own way. im doin bottle painting, i used water-based paints. so what i did, i have empty perfume bottle and gave it to my grandson. i just let him do the painting, tho its messy, he creates a good design. its funny and he enjoyed it. and it cost so little, cuz water based paint are cheaper than any other paints and safe for the kids.only the finale of his painting was, i did some retouch. empty bottle (small one, be sure its safe, remove the caps, and clean it first) another is clay..can be bought to any natonal bookstore...he can create some animals/caricature in it, thorough guidance and explanation can do help him, enhancing his ability regarding craftmanship. and this would a good start for him. in bottle painting first we applied glue/paste, then the water-based paint by hand stroke (diff. colors, you will notice the fun on his face. let it dry for seconds, then you as a teacher/mother apply varnish to the finish products of her craft. (dont let him touch the varnish, and dont let him inhale.) after this show it to him his finish crafts.

You can make thing out of wood and other stuff you collect outdoors. you can make animals and houses with all sorts of twings and sticks. you may also look for some art show to take him to. He may enjoy just observing art. also check you local library if they have an arts and crafts hour!

Good luck

When My Girls were that age they loved to draw, trace, and make a big mess. If you have any old sponges you can cut them into different shapes and use finger paint or other paints that are safe for kids. And you could make confetti out of colored paper or any paper. let him go outside and toss into the air on a windy day and chase it. that will make him happy and burn off energy

Check out this and other "recycling" craft sites: http://www.kidsdomain.com/craft/_recycle.html No need to buy stuff if you're using stuff you'd pitch to begin with!

Your 4 yr old would just love finger painting and play dough.

It's not expensive either.

finger painting is always fun for little kids, they love it. Also since it is fall maybe going outside and looking for cool leaves and putting them under a piece of paper then rubbing the crayons over makes a cool picture.

if you have a dollar tree near you they are awesome sources for heaps of cheap stuff. Pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, fuzzy little balls, and lots of other stuff can be found in any aisle. We used to build little houses out of popsicle sticks with elmers glue. glue four of them into a square and keep stacking. macaroni and elmers on some construction paper to make fun drawings. add any of the aforementioned things to make it more fun. good luck
