My poor baby is in trouble! I have a nine year old comet that is now swimming on his side. Most likely a swim bladder problem (I haven't had any other food for him other than stupid flakes and havne't been soaking them before adding) but could possibly be something else.

All chem levels are fine and the other two babies look ok.

I need to know how to save my poor Speckles. I did a partial just in case I missed something. He has proper filtration and if you've read any of my posts, you know how adament I am about tank size and goldies.

Please please help!

I found a site that said to give thawed out peas which for some reason work. Well, Alastor and Draco liked the peas, but Speckles just couldn't get to them.

Please help!

When I fed the goldies this morning, they were all right side up...though now that I think of it, Speckles was toward the bottom of the tank...

I came home from work much much later and he was on his side on the bottom (at first I thought he was dead) but then he tried coming over to greet me.

I thawed the peas and put those in but he won't eat them. Might have to try a few more.

My poor baby.

Here is some info for you. I'm sorry to know this has happened to him (and it appears there is not cure for it), but perhaps this will make his life a little bit better.

Okay.. this worked for several goldfish I grew up with. I don't know how safe it is with other fish, but it has worked with some worse case scenarios I've delt with. Several fish were on the brink of death and were swimming upright by the next day.

Take a small children's aspirin and crush it. Offer less than 1/4 of the pill. Hopefully the children's aspirin will help along with the peas, especially if there's inflammation. Make sure you remove any excess aspirin when speckles is done! I wouldn't feed more than a children's aspirin over a week as I'd be afraid of overdosing. My dad first did this with a full adult tablet and the fish lived another year and a half. Ever since I've been cautious, especially since I know how toxic some medications can be with some animals.

Good luck!

I had this problem with one of my bettas. Poor guy was a mess when we rescued him, and the pea thing actually worked. Did you cook the peas and cool them first? And then shell them? They can't digest the shells too well, which could actually worsen swimbladder issues.

Have you tried fasting for a couple of days? This sometimes works, too, but since your little guy is already on the turnover stage, I imagine it's too late to try that...

Hmm... looking to my normal source of info. Oooh! Did you know that you can burp him if he's big enough? That's...creepy....

*heebiejeebie* Apparently, if this continues, your last resort is to take a sterile needle and, uh, pop it. Um.. don't do that..

Try shelling the peas and witholding all food for a couple of days (with the exception of the peas). Why do the peas work? I dunno. But you sit and eat a whole can of peas, and see how long it takes you until you have to run to the bathroom.

This could be contipation, bacterial infection, or just age. 9 years is a good run for a goldfish in a tank. I'd remove him into a bowl of tank water for 2 days. Feed him some peeled cooked peas, and treat the bowl with melafix.

PS- Raw peas are good eats for gold fish. Cooked peas are exlax.
