As far as I know the answer would be no. See back in those days a lot of people were buried alive. So to combat the problem they had 1 inch diameter shafts that came from the coffin and about 1 foot above the ground at the end of the shaft was a bell attached to a rope and it went down to the body. So if you woke up you could just pull the string and someone working in the cemetary would get you out. That is also where the term the graveyard shift came from.

My best guest is that many people were accidentally buried alive during that time, so it would have been a good source of realistic horror for Poe's audiences. People were even buried with bells attached to their fingers or other contraptions to let the world know if they were still alive.

No. He was found unconscious on a Baltimore street. In a brief obituary the Baltimore Clipper reported that Poe had died of "congestion of the brain." He did write a story called 'The Premature Burial.' Link below.

No, but Stephen King really did meet the Crimson King.

Ps. Poe is cool. His detective stories are aces.

No, he died in a Baltimore Infirmary in 1849. There's a picture of him in his coffin on the site 'Celebrity Morgue.' The pic looks real enough to me. I think its the genuine thing.
