He was most definitely overrated. Nearly all of his theories that could be held up to scientific scrutiny have been discredited. Those that haven't been discredited are those theories that aren't even testable! In this day and age of science, we would consider his "theories" as mere speculation, with no evidence to support them.
As someone else said, the problem is that he used himself and a few case studies to attempt to generalize to the entire population. If you have had an intro course in research & methodologies, you know that you can't do that!
He was one of the 1st influential people in psychology, but as the profession moves ahead, he is less and less important. Even his psychoanalysis techniques (referred to today as "Freudian Analysis") are no longer commonly used because it has been shown through several research studies that patients/clients do better in a humanistic or client-centered approach to therapy and counseling. Many research studies have documented the Freudian Analysis to be totally ineffective.

My personal opinion is that Freud was a pervert. I don't believe in his theorys. However, I do have to give him props. His philosophy has sparked a whole new and interesting subject in literature. There have been a lot of interesting movies and books based on Freud's theory. It's just one of those fun things to imagine.

His views...and his Interpretation of Dreams was one of my first stabs at serious reading...still have validity but not sanctity. By this I mean bits and pieces still permeate much of psychiatry and psychology, but they are no longer considered unquestionable. Often they contribute to but do not serve as the foundation of the newer theories.
A quiet revolution is unfolding in the field. Virtually all of mental behavior is now viewed as chemical reactions w/in the brain. Freud is increasingly difficult to fit into that framework. He is almost being transferred to sociology.

If you are going to accuse us of believing conspiracy theories, you should at least accuse us accurately of what "conspiracies" we believe in: 1. There is no proof that Obama was born in Kenya. 2. Obama has connections with the Muslim Brotherhood. 3. Obama did not plot and plan the Benghazi attacks, but his incompetence sure as heck led to it AND he was totally involved in covering up the administration's mistakes. 4. Obama had nothing to do with the Benghazi attacks but it does highlight the fact that radical Islam is NOT subdued as Obama's campaign rhetoric would lead us to believe.

Most of his theories have been discredited, but he was the first person to apply scientific principles to studying the mind. His mistake was in using himself as the comparative norm, rather than getting a large sample.

i admit i think freud went overboard on some things and that sometimes a banana is just a banana. but i also think he did groundbreaking work and that a lot of his stuff is valid. very much so!
plus you should try reading some of his stuff regarding how he experimented on himself with drugs, notably cocaine
