The new Decemberists album, The Crane Wife, is set to release in October. It will be the their first release on a major label, and I've already heard from several fans of the band that they think the album will be a disappointment.

Do people fear label tampering? Do people think that creativity will be stifled? Do people automatically assume that the band's sound will be changed? Is a change in sound always a bad thing? What if The Crane Wife had been released on their old label -- would it still be meet with the same distaste?

I'm looking forward to it, although I agree that it will be tough to top Her Majesty and Picaresque.

People dread it when underground bands go mainstream because they truly love the band and are so nervous of "losing" them to the mtv crowd. I mean, this happened to me with many many many bands, and it sucks when someone looks at you buying a cd and thinks you're one of these posers when you've been into them for 5 years!

Ugh. It happens.

Also, when bands sign to big labels they often feel pressured to change their sound and become more "radio friendly" in order to succeed. That happens a lot with hardcore/metalcore acts.

There's just something about indie bands... It might be that we love them because not many people have heard about them or that they can do anything and be as creative as they like, Im not really sure, Im fine when an indie band goes into an indie label, but Ive never seen an indie band I like go into a major label.

i like indie music because there's more say in how the music sounds by the musicians. money isn't that much of an issue and bands are more concerned on doing what they want instead of having corporate america tell them what they should sound like.

btw, i LOVE the decemberists... do you have the tarkio albums? it's colin's band before them. they're great, but they no longer exist.

we see it happen all the time.. an indy makes it "big" It is a shame.. why? because yes, the record company molds them into what sells. might not happen on the first disk but by the next "the Man" has full controll.

just look at all the past bands that sold out.

Did they sell out? Is what got them to the Bigs going to get pushed aside for album sales and stadium tours?

I think they do this because they think that they have sold out, that they're changing their style to be more commercial and sell. Don't know if it's necessarily true, though.
