Advantages: It removes a lot of overhead from law enforcement, and clarifies may definitions scattered through federal law. Better enforcement tools against counterfeiting and money laundering. Aid to families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

Advantages to the govt (disadvantages to the people): It allows the govt near-unlimited access to medical files, libary records, purchase and sale records, school transcripts and many other types of personal information without a warrant.

Disadvantages to the govt (advantages to the people): It doesn't completely strip 4th Amendment protections, just mostly.

For those interested in reading the law itself, see link below. The table of contents provides a good overview to most provisions.

Your question will receive mostly ignorant answers by people who are spoon fed their responses by mass media. I wouldn't doubt it if only 1/2 a percent of people have even read a brief synopsis of what the Patriot Act does. I personally have only read parts of it so I am no genius when it comes to the full scope of what it covers by all means.

I do believe one of the best features is the Financial Anti-Terrorism Act which allows the feds to better oversee funds being sent to terrorist organizations and prosecute them.
