I'd like to get answers from males who have insight to a specific translation of this. I dress conservatively, sometimes I'm with my husband who is of another race than myself. I am considered attractive by many but I am no cover girl and my body is medium build. I am conscious of not staring at people but if I look up I often smile since I'm a friendly person. It is not a gawk or stare but a "hello" type of smile. What gives?

Actually, many times, it happens without my husband by my side. Thanks for your insight.

Are you always with your husband when this happens? If so, it's obvious they are racists. And who cares what they think? If not...no idea.

Only 2 options:

1) You're reading into it a lot more than you should. Just a coincidence that you see them spitting while you're there. Maybe they have been spitting before you came and even after you leave. This would be especially true of smokers/tobacco chewers.

2) They are racists and don't like your ethnic significant other.

Either way, don't worry about them. Make the best you can of this life.

All the best!

My ex-wife and I experienced something like this many years ago when we moved to a very nice neighborhood (they'd slam doors on our faces or not hold the elevator door if they saw us with bags) but we persevered and showed them that WE had manners and we were also above their pettiness and their obvious bigotry, and when they discovered that we had more education than most of them, they were SHOCKED (we also looked awfully young for our ages, and we were always together and going and coming about our business and never involved in any of their activities... we were never invited). She still lives there and all of the older people have since died out... my wife is treated with a lot more respect than the other tenants there. Every now and then I see one or two of the younger former tenants and they still call me "Professor" even though I've told them repeatedly that I am NOT a professor.

Keep your dignity and sense of self-respect. Don't pay attention to their bigotry (if you pay attention to it, you are acknowledging it and you are lowering yourself to their level... act as though you failed to see their ignorance). Good luck and best wishes.

My daughters boyfriend is of another race. We live in a southern state and sometimes she tells me that men will stare at her with dirty, mean looks. I'm glad I don't see it because I would probably have to go talk to that person and sort him or her out. So, it could be that.

The answerer's you've got already answered, and they're right.

Don't even care what the spitters think, or what they 'care".
